Chapter 79
Mediating profound grievances will inevitably leave lingering resentment—how can this be considered a proper resolution? Thus, the sage holds the contractual token yet does not use its clauses to harshly demand compliance from others. Those with virtue govern through the spirit of agreement, while the virtue-less rigidly enforce the letter of the law. The natural law shows no partiality, yet it subtly favors those who nurture goodwill and act with kindness.
Notes:
1. "Contractual token" (左契): This term preserves the cultural essence of ancient covenant systems while enhancing modern comprehension.
2. "Rigidly enforce the letter" (司彻): By contrasting "spirit of agreement" with "letter of the law," this phrasing highlights the distinction between virtuous focus on principles and the unvirtuous obsession with formalities.
3. "Natural law" (天道): This rendering aligns with Laozi’s philosophical framework while resonating with contemporary discourse.
4. "Nurture goodwill and act with kindness": The expanded phrasing clarifies the dual essence of "善人" (virtuous individuals), emphasizing both inner intention and outward action.
